Borage Family

You recognize most species belonging to the borage family by their hairy stems, buds and leaves, giving them a rough touch. The hairs help the plant from drying out quickly. Perhaps this is why they survive so well in dry dunes. Some people get skin reactions from the hairs. Borage species can contain a substance which causes the flowers to change from red to blue when aging. Plant specialists think that this is a signal to insects that the flower has been depleted of pollen and nectar. The borage family, also known as the forget-me-not family, varies from herbal flowers to bushes and even trees.
