Grass Family
The grass family is the most important plant family for man as well as for many animals. The land surface of the earth is largely overgrown with grass, of one sort or another. It's not difficult to see the relationship between the word 'grazer' and 'grass'. The fruit of a number of grasses, in the form of grains, is consumed by man. Other plants from this family have much practical value, such as reed and marram grass.

The Texelaars have developed an unusual way of using grass. They cut grass sods to build garden walls. These have been used for centuries for keeping livestock in or out of bounds, particularly on the oldest part of the island, the Hoge Berg. They used to place prickly branches on top of the garden walls (tuinwallen) but now use barbed wire.
