Arable farming

Agriculture takes place in fertile clay soils. Most of the large-scale farms are located in the Danish coastal region and in Groningen. Grain production is mostly in Denmark, wheat and barley being the principal crops. Grain is also the dominant crop in Schleswig-Holstein and Niedersachsen. Corn for feed is expanding as a major crop. Sugar beet and potatoes are the primary crops in Groningen. Grain is relatively minor here.

  • Flower bulbs

An unusual form of agriculture takes place in the western part of the wadden region (North-Holland and Texel). The sandy soils on the inland side of the dunes is extremely suitable for growing flower bulbs, such as tulips, lilies and crocuses.
