Unusual crops: sea aster and salicorn

A number of plants grow on the salt marshes along the Wadden Sea, which are very tasty and healthy. Nowadays, two species are offered to consumers on a growing market: sea aster and salicorn.

  • Maritime vegetables

Because the demand for these exclusive 'maritime vegetables' is growing, sea aster and salicorn are not only gathered from the salt marshes themselves but are also grown commercially. Salt marshes can be imitated inland of the dikes at places where saltwater seepage takes place. The plots of land where these crops grow are regularly flooded with salt water, which kills the weeds but creates an ideal growing situation for sea aster and salicorn.
