Pelagic fisheries

When a flatfish fisherman catches fish that isn't flat, then he has caught pelagic or round fish. Haddock, cod and whiting are the pelagic species regularly caught in bottom trawling nets. According to fishermen, herring and mackerel don't count as pelagic fish because they swim throughout the water column and are rarely caught in a net meant to catch flatfish. Cod is often caught using trawling nets or with standing rigging. Most cod live on stony bottoms and around wrecks. Whiting can also be caught with floating trawls and haddock is caught by English and Scottish fishermen with longlines. Longlining is using a long floating line with bait hanging from shorter lines. Pelagic fishing is mostly done by fishermen with small to medium-sized ships.
