Organizations and authorities in the (Dutch) fishery world

The fishery world consists of many organizations and authorities. The Productschap Vis is the public umbrella for the entire branch, including the fish-processing industry and trade. The fishermen have united in various unions and clubs, the most important ones being the Dutch Fishing Union, the Federation of Fishery Clubs and the ZeViBel (Zeeland fishery interests, which represents the interests of the shellfish and eel fisheries in particular).

  • Policy in the Netherlands

    The fishery policy in the Netherlands falls directly under the directorate Food Quality, of the Ministry for Agriculture, Nature Management and Food Quality. The supervision of observance of various regulations related to the fisheries is in the hands of the General Inspection Service (AID) of the same ministry.

  • Research in the Netherlands

    Fishery studies are mostly performed by the fisheries department of IMARES. Internationally, the ICES (International Council for Exploration of the Seas, located in Copenhagen) plays an important role. Europêche is the European Association of national organizaions of fishing enterprises (such as Productschap Vis).
