ICES

ICES (International Council for Exploration of the Seas, located in Copenhagen) is an international joint venture of fishery biologists, founded in 1902. It coordinates and promotes marine research in the North Atlantic. It has also done research concerning the effects of sand and gravel exploitation and is still involved in continual studies of the effects of various forms of pollution. In addition, ICES provides recommendations for fish quota for the European Community. There are presently twenty countries that are members of the ICES. This includes all of the North Sea coastal states.
