Managing the fish stock
Managing the fishing stocks in the North Sea is necessary because it has been proven in the past that important species such as herring and cod can just about disappear due to overfishing. Field studies of the spawning stock and the growth of the important species have been made. These data have been used to formulate fishery models. In this way, one can predict the future of the fish species. These predictions play a large role when determining the quota for the various types of fish. When the stock of a fish species is very low, farmed fish are sometimes released, or restocked.
