Maritime culture

The sea gives, the sea takes. On the one hand, the sea is a source of income. For example, fisheries and the opportunity to trade. On the other hand, storm and floods turn the sea into an enemy. The unusual relationship the Dutch have with the sea can be found in their culture going far back in time. Culture is not limited to art. The sea can also be found in the Dutch language, such as the swear word ish wife and th expression ‘to take one’s chances with’ (literal translation: to go to sea with someone).

  • Subjects

Various expressions of culture that share the sea as theme are addressed here. Not all expressions are handled, but an impression of typical coastal and sea arts. The sea is always the theme; in the case of landscape art, the sea and coast are even part of the art form.
Examples of the sea in paintings, sculptures, films and even music and theater are given.
