Trial drillings

Trial drilling for oil or gas lasts several months. A drilling platform is installed at sea while a drilling tower is built on land. The rigs for trial drills are towed relatively rapidly to an area in the sea and anchored. If the trial drill turns up a profitable oil or gas field, a different (production) platform is usually installed.

The drilling rig which executes a trial drill is not attached to the pipeline network. The gas exploited is not processed, but is burned at the drilling rig itself: this is called 'burn-off'. At a trial drill for oil, where oil is actually exploited, an amount of natural gas is also often released, and is always burned off.
