Drifting dunes on Terschelling

At several places on Terschelling, the dunes are permitted free play. Drift dunes are a natural coastal element. Unusual flora and fauna can be found on these primary dunes. A drifting dune originates when the vegetation layer is removed in one way or the other. Sometimes, it takes more than just the removal of the top layer to expose the dune sand. Originally, drifting dunes which became overgrown would start drifting themselves. With the help of these nature development projects, new dunes will sometimes develop under influence of the wind at places where there are no dunes.
