Notched dune ridge

The State Forestry presented the plan for cutting through the row of dunes between Bergen and Schoorl in the Autumn of 1996, with the goal of offering opportunities for nature development in the more inland lying dune landscape. This dune region is the widest in the Netherlands. Therefore, there is little danger of flooding. and the safety of the population is not an issue. The digging began on 1 November 1997. Since then, many unusual plants and animals have established themselves in the area and a fascinating landscape has evolved.

  • Mission accomplished

The goal of making the ridge was to get the sand to drift again and to increase the influence of the seawater on the region. This goal has been reached. Rare and threatened salt-loving plant species, such as sea spurge, marsh helleborine, sea plantain and frosted orache have quickly taken root. In addition, many rare species of toadstools have also been reported.
