Natuurmonumenten (Society for the Promotion of Nature Reserves)

Natuurmonumenten (NM) is a society which is committed to a viable Netherlands by purchasing, managing and protecting nature areas. It manages more than three hundred nature terrains which is a total surface area of around 88,400 hectare spread throughout the country. NM counted more than 946,000 members in early 2004. The organization was founded by several Dutch conservationists in 1905, including Jac. P. Thijsse.

  • Livable and accessible

    NM is concerned with preserving nature, landscapes and the corresponding cultural history, as well as the welfare of man. It wants make nature accessible for the entire society while protecting it at the same time.
    Important nature areas along the coast managed by Natuurmonumenten are: the Schorren on Texel, the 'Lage land van Texel', the National Park Schiermonnikoog, Zwanenwater near Callantsoog, the Hegewiersterfjild near Harlingen, the Dollard, the Sunken Land of South Beveland and the former work island Neeltje Jans.
    Together with six other organizations, Natuurmonumenten founded a youth club in 2005 called the Wildzoekers. The purpose is to excite the youth more for nature, with the help of competition and team building. Teams of kids are equipped with portophones, binoculars and notebooks in their search for plants and animals. The website of the Wildzoekers (wild searchers) serves as a virtual clubhouse.
