State Forestry

The State Forestry (SBB) is the Netherlands largest 'green' manager. It manages many types of nature areas, spread throughout the whole country. The State Forestry provides for all kinds of facilities in the nature areas, such as paths, marked footpaths and biking routes and day camping terrains, so that everyone can enjoy their areas. However, its most important goal is to maintain and develop valuable nature.

  • Coastal protection

Some of the notable nature areas along the coast which are managed by the SBB are the Slufter on Texel, the Schotsman on the border of the Veerse Meer and the Lauwersmeer in Groningen. In 2004, the State Forestry had a total of 242,734 hectare nature, forrest and recreational terrains in their possession.

  • Military in the dunes

During a symposium in March 2000, the chairman of the State Forestry proposed allowing the military access to their land in exchange for management of the military training grounds. Because these lands often border each other, the motivation behind this proposal is to connect them together to create large nature areas. Military usage would have to satisfy certain conditions, such as guaranteeing no irreversible damage. Damage created by hikers and bicyclist is already permittted, which is why the State Forestry finds limited damage by the military also acceptable.
