Kiting and kite surfing

Kiting is a popular sport on the beach, where the wind is usually stronger than on land. There are generally no restrictions for simple kites. However because power kites (stunt kiting) can be dangerous for other beach visitors, they are only allowed on the beach outside of busy areas. For the same reason, kite surfing is usually only allowed outside of the guarded areas of the beach.

  • Spectacular

Kite surfing is a sport which has become very popular very rapidly, particularly due to the spectacular jumps that advanced surfers make on the waves. The kite is a large dirigible kite, resembling a parachute. The surfer stands on a special surf board and is attached to the kite via a safety harness. With sufficient wind, the kite pulls the surfer over the water.

  • Locations

Four areas in Friesland were designated for kite surfing in 2006. There are two areas on Texel along the North Sea where it is tolerated and one area on the Wadden Sea side, although the Wadden Sea location is controversial. The province of North-Holland first wants to know what the effects are on the marine fauna.
In 2006, the kite-surfing club in Den Helder requested a kite location in the waters around the sandbank Noorderhaaks. This request was denied by the town of Texel. The government strives to keep the amount of recreation as low as possible in the area, due to the seals and seabirds that use the sandbank to rest.
