The North Sea as well as the Wadden Sea are heavily navigated areas. Transportation of cargo per ship is more economic and less polluting for the environment than other forms of transportation. However, there are also negative aspects which are presently being worked upon to improve the sector. The emphasis in the North Sea lies by transportation of cargo and the fisheries, while pleasure boating plays an additional role in the Wadden Sea. Large ships cannot sail in the Wadden Sea because almost all of the channels are too shallow.
