Division of the shipping on the North Sea, Ecomare

Shipping by sort

In the Dutch section of the North Sea, around 340 ships can be found throughout the day. Approximately 250,000 shipping trips are made per year in this same area. Shipping is primarily subdivided into ocean shipping (tankers, bulk carriers, work vessels (or suppliers), container ships), coastal shipping and inland shipping. Furthermore, there are various ferry services. Shipping in the North Sea has declined since the end of the 20th century since ships are able to transport larger amounts of cargo.

  • Cargo transport

In total, 300 million tons of cargo were unloaded and 85 million tons were loaded in 1995 in Dutch sea harbours. In 2005, 329 million tons of cargo were unloaded and 102 million tons were loaded. In 1998, it was expected that with respect to 1995, cargo transportation over water would grow in the following 15 years by around 50%. Seeing the actual data ten years later, this estimate now seems too high. Transportation via land would also double in the same period. The increase is expected particularly in container transportation. The government wants to stimulate transportation over water since it is environmentally friendlier and safer than transportation per truck or airplane. Ships use four to seven times less fuel per ton of transportated cargo than road transporters.
