'Growing with the sea'

In October 1996, the World Wildlife Foundation together with the National Institute for Coastal and Marine Management presented a new plan concerning the development of the Dutch coast: the report 'Growing with the sea'. Environmental institutes and an engineering bureau were involved in the study. In the meantime, many of the proposals in this report have been incorporated into the policy and management of the coast. For example, possibilities for breaches in the beach ridges during high tide (slufter formation) have been created at a number of places where it has been deemed safe. And sand blows in the dunes are not combated.
