Land reclamation in the Netherlands

The days of land reclamation from salt marsh works and large impoldering in the Netherlands is past. The transition took place when need for extra agricultural land in the Netherlands diminished. Nevertheless, there are occasional plans for new land reclamation, but in that case the extra ground is for industry and transportation (Maasvlakte, Schiphol-in-sea) or housing (coastal location). Occasionally, other plans are developed whereby the entire Dutch coastline is relocated. The most recent variation of such a plan is called the 'blue islands. All plans for land reclamation along the coast have as disadvantage that it requires radical changes in a unique nature area.

  • Plans

The policy for land reclamation projects in the North Sea is found in the Spatial Planning. In the governmental resolution of the Fifth Note for Environmental Planning, the predecessor of the Spatial Planning Note, there is a plan for enlarging the Maas plain (Maasvlakte) and a land claim for an airport in sea. No room has been reserved for the coastal location and the Haakse seadike.
