Coastal location

The idea for a new strip of land seawards of the South Holland coast originated around 1985, called the Waterman Plan. The name 'Nieuw Holland' cropped up later. And even more later on, one spoke mostly about the 'coastal location' according to the design from the architect Bhalotra. It includes around 4000 hectare new land, with room for housing, greenhouses, nature areas and recreational facilities. There was a lot of attention for this plan between 1996 and 1999, however there was no political platform. Plans of this caliber are regularly presented when it comes to solving the lack of space problem in the Randstad (the area in the Netherlands which is most populated). In 2006, the government saw insufficient prospects for this coastal expansion in the coming 20 to 25 years.
