Policy for water and coastal management in the Netherlands

The general policy for the 'wet Public Works' is found in the successive Notes on Water Management. The Third Note on Water Management, which appeared in 1990 under the title 'Water for now and later', was valid till 1998. In 1999, the governmental resolution, the Fourth Note on Water Management, was published. Water managed extends further than land boundaries. In 2000, a European directive appeared to protect surface and groundwater in Europe: the European Water Framework Directive (EWFD).

  • Specific notes

In addition to all the national laws and notes, policy is determined per subject based upon specific notes. For example, the Coastal Defence policy appeared in 1996, which established policy related to coastal defence. A partial note for a specific region is also possible, such as the Voordelta.
The amount reserved in 2008 in the Netherlands for water management was 5 billion euros. The majority is for protection from flooding, but part of it is spent on improving water quality. In the Natuurbalans 2008, emphasis is put on the coupling water management with nature and landscape policy, particularly in nature developing areas.
