Shifting the coastline
The Haakse sea dike is a plan made by Rob van den Haak and Pieter Stokman, two pensioned engineers. Their plan evolved from the awareness that relatively small expansions of the Holland coastline, such as the Maas Plain and the harbour piers of IJmuiden, lea to a significant amount of coastal erosion elsewhere. A new dike, beginning by the tip of Walcheren and further up around 25 kilometers from the present coast, would help solve this problem. The land would not be reclaimed behind the dike, but there would be room for islands for habitation, a second airport, expansion of the Maas Plain and windmill parks. The lagoons would be important for water storage as well as generating tidal energy.
