Primary production
In a food pyramid, the first step is to convert inorganic material into organic material. The organisms which perform this conversion use energy. This energy can come from sunlight via photosynthesis, however chemical energy can also be used. This method of generating energy is called chemosynthesis. The best known primary producers are plants.
