Carboniferous period (from 368 to 288 million years ago)

The Carboniferous period lasted from 368 to 288 million years ago. It was a time when Western Europe was located in the tropics. The land was around sea level and overgrown with large tropical swampy forests. Immense coal and natural gas deposits evolved from the remains of these forests.

Dead branches, tree trunks and leaves landed in the peat bog and were preserved. These plant remains were later buried under thick layers of clay and sand. The weight of the new layers of earth pressed the underlying plant mass until it petrified into coal. The natural gas found in the North Sea region also originates from these layers of coal.
