IMARES, Wageningen University

IMARES stands for Institute for Marine Resources & Ecosystem Studies and is associated with the University of Wageningen. The organization is made up of the former RIVO in IJmuiden and Yerseke, Alterra-Texel and TNO Ecological Risks Den Helder. RIVO was the former Fisheries Research Institute. Although the plans were to concentrate the North-Holland organizations in one central place, it was decided at the end of 2006 to maintain the old situation for the time being. Imares specializes in strategic and applied marine ecological research.

  • Marine ecology

The unit marine ecology of IMARES is made up of the former marine division of Alterra and from parts of the former RIVO. The major part of the department is located on Texel. The themes of their research are:
    - Ecosystem effects
    - Effects of infrastructural works
    - Advising management
    - Surveys at sea
    - climate and marine studies
    - fish immigration in the rivers

  • Fisheries biology

The fishery biological branch of IMARES is made up of part of the former RIVO-DLO. Tasks include guarding the volume of the fish populations in the European and Dutch waters (also for ICES) and controlling the quality of the fish, fish products and shellfish. Much research is done on location, together with fishermen, fish farmers and fish processing companies.
This branch has research activiies divided over four departments: biological studies, technological research, aquaculture and environment, quality and food. These departments work closely. Questions concerning other terrains (such as in the field of economy, sociology or foodstuff technology) are tackled toghether with other DLO institutes which are more involved in the specific subject.
The fisheries branch of IMARES is situated at two locations: IJmuiden and Yerseke and have a number of research vessels.
