Moor frog

The moor frog can be found along the whole coastline of the Netherlands, however it is a rare species. There are none living on the Frisian Wadden Islands. It is bonded to a low, damp terrain and needs open water for reproduction. The moor frog is being threatened by large-scale interventions in the landscape (agriculture, nature development) and is sensitive to dessication and acidification of its habitat.

On Texel

This species is reasonably numerous on Texel. The animal was probably on Texel before the island broke loose from the mainland. The other Wadden Islands were never attached to the mainland. However since 1994, edible frogs have become more prominent, whereby nature managers are afraid that it will not be long before the moor frog disappears from the damp dune valleys.

  • Vulnerable species

The moor frog is a vulnerable species on the endangered list for amphibians and reptiles.
