Disturbing birds of the tidal flats

Bird scientists noticed in 1995 that especially birds in the tidal flat region react differently to disturbances than ten years before. Birds do not stay in the air as long. Does this mean that they are growing accustomed to human disturbances or is selection playing a role by the birds so that only the tamer ones remain?
