Herons

Beak, neck and legs make up the major part of the length of herons. The long limbs are ideal for standing in a ditch and catching frogs and fish with a sweep. In order to nest, herons make large nests from a platform of branches. Some species nest on the ground, others high in the trees.

On Texel

You won't find many nests from heron species on Texel. Only several nests from the grey heron and bittern are found on Texel. The little egret has been seen on the island since 2000, however no nests have yet been discovered. However, a bird watcher did see one with branches in its beak. There are many sayings in Dutch dialect about herons: 'Speeje as een reiger' means throwing up; 'skijte as een reiger' means refers to diarrhea.
