Turbot

These large flatfish easily change to the color of the sea floor. By camouflaging themselves so well, they are able to catch a meal of crustaceans and fish that swim past their hideout. Turbot themselves are often eaten by people. The body is practically round and covered with bony knobs. Turbot have a relatively large head and mouth. As opposed to most flatfish, their eyes rotate to the left side of the body.

  • Distribution of turbot
    Distribution of turbot, Ecomare

Turbot is found in the northeastern Atlantic Ocean, in the North Sea and in the Baltic Sea. It is a common fish along the Dutch coast. Young turbot grow up in warm shallow coastal water. They are regularly caught along the beach.

  • Farming turbot

In Belgium, they have been experimenting with releasing cultivated young turbot into the sea. The animals remained off the Belgium coast during their first months and moved to deeper, more northerly water in the winter. They returned in the spring to shallow coastal waters. Farmed turbot seem to adapt well to conditions in the wild.

  • Food
    Turbot, Ecomare

At the larva stage, turbot stuff themselves with small active zooplankton. As juveniles, they eat small crustaceans. When longer than 10 centimeters, it starts to feed on fish, and the amount of crustaceans in its diet decreases. When a turbot is longer than 30 centimeters, its diet is purely fish.
