Gobies

Gobies are benthic inhabitants. They are small, have a short life span a big typical head, two dorsal fins and joined pelvic fins. They live in shallow water from the end of the summer through the autumn and migrate in the winter to deeper water where they spawn in the spring. Gobies eat small crustaceans and fish larvae and form prey for many coastal birds and larger fish. The sand goby and diminutive goby are two species in this family.

  • Species

The various species of gobies are difficult to distinguish from one another. The two most common species of the Dutch coast and Wadden Sea are the common goby and the sand goby.
