Sturgeon

Sturgeon are large, primitive fish with an armoured head. Their long snout with a kind of bulging trunk is characteristic. They grow to six meters long, 1000 kilogram in weight and 100 years old. They have no scales, but cartilaginous plates on their body. they eat primarily benthic animals. In the spring, they migrate to the rivers to spawn. The eggs are sold as caviar. One female can lay up to 2.5 million eggs. Water pollution is another important cause for the disappearance of the sturgeon.

Since 1920, sturgeon have become more scarce in the Dutch waters, partially because they were caught on the way to their spawning grounds. There have been only a few recent sightings of sturgeon along the Dutch coast. In 1999, the GO33 caught a sturgeon near the Haringsvliet locks.
The sturgeon is categorized as an extinct animal species on the Dutch list of endangered freshwater fish species.
