Invertebrates

Invertebrates are animals that do not possess a spinal column. Insects, spiders and crustaceans have an external skeleton made from chitin, a horn-like substance, which gives them firmness. Other invertebrates (such as shellfish) build a house from calcium. In total, around 96% of all the animals are invertebrates.
