Winged insects

Winged insects are those insects which undergo a metamorphosis, whether partial or complete. Many insects undergo a complete metamorphosis: eggs are laid by the adults, larvae hatch out the eggs and undergo a pupal stage. An incomplete metamorphosis has no pupal stage. Butterflies undergo a complete metamorphosis while grasshoppers and true bugs have an incomplete metamorphosis. The phenomenon gall-formation is found throughout the insect kingdom. The eggs are laid on the leaf of a plant. In turn, the plant defends itself by forming proliferat tissue, a gall, around the eggs. When the eggs hatch, the larvae consume the gall tissue.
