Rayed artemis

The rayed artemis is a sturdy circular shell with an arched top. It is found in the North Sea at great depths. If you are lucky enough to find one on the beach, the chances are great that it was carried ashore with a sand nourishment. The anmal lives far away from the coast, where sand is exploited for replenishing the beaches. All kinds animals also land on the beach with the sand, animals which otherwise are never found there, such as the rayed artemis.

  • Distribution and habitat

    The rayed artemis is found in the North Sea at depths down to 100 meters. It burrows itself into coarse sand or muddy gravel.
