Worms

Worms account for an important part of the benthic fauna of the sea and tidal flats. There are all kinds of animals that look like worms externally. However, they differ enormously internally. Many worms live in the sea floor. They digest enormous amounts of plankton, waste and smaller benthic animals. They themselves are eaten by seabirds, shorebirds and flatfish. They are also used by sport fishermen, the best known being the lugworms and ragworms.

  • Parasites

There are also worms that live as parasites in or on another animal. Tapeworms, ribbon worms, internal and external leeches and several species of nematodes are parasites. They are described further in the chapter "Parasites in fish and other sea fauna'.
