Star ascidian

Star ascidians look like sturdy, smooth, cartilaginous crust, usually purple in color, and covered with star-shaped figures. These stars consists of wreaths of individual sea squirts with a common excurrent opening. The star ascidian is the most common colony-forming sea squirt in the Netherlands. Colonies can be found growing in the Wadden Sea and in the waters of Zeeland, particularly on ropes, tires and other such surfaces in yacht harbours.
