Mushrooms on salt marshes

A couple of characteristic mushrooms species for salt marshes are the Marasmiellus trabutii, the field blewit and the salt-loving Agaricus. They are found on areas that only flood occasionally. Field blewit often grows in areas where lots of seaweeds and other plant materials wash ashore.

On Texel

Mushrooms are found growing along the edges of the Slufter and Mok Bay. Thanks to the sheep that still graze in the Mok Bay and used to graze in the Slufter, you can find salt-loving Agaricus on the sheep manure. Furthermore, field blewits can be found growing in the flood mark. Perhaps now that there are cows grazing in the Slufter, species of mushrooms that favor cow manure may be found in the future.

  • Agraricus bernardii

The Agraricus bernardii grows on salt marshes. In Dutch, it is appropriately called the 'salt marsh mushroom'. However, you may even find it along roadsides that are salted during the winter. It's not that the Agraricus bernardii needs salt to grow, but it can tolerate it, just like sea lavender. It is not a very common mushroom. Although it is edible, it has a fishy smell and is not very tasty. This mushroom looks a lot like the one you buy in the store, but turns reddish when bruised or cut.

  • Field blewit

Although the field blewit also grows on dune grasslands and woods, it can also tolerate a small amount of salt. The higher parts of the salt marsh, where seaweed has gathered, makes a good place to look for this mushroom. On the seaside of dikes is also a possibility. Another name for this mushroom is blue-leg. The Dutch call it the 'purple-stemmed false knight'. Blue or purple, field blewits have a stem with a definite color. However, the plates are fleshy colored. This is one of the distinguishing features from the blewit which has lilac-colored gills.

  • Marasmiellus trabutii

The Marasmiellus trabutii is a small white mushroom. It is an extremely rare mushroom found exclusively on a couple of places along the Dutch coast. It grows on dead stems of sea rush in salty areas or on the leaves of marram grass in the outer dunes.
