Purple laver

Purple laver is a red seaweed with a thallus which looks like thin brown or purple leaves. The species is resistant to short periods of dryness and will continue further growth when its surroundings become wet again. Purple laver growson wood and stones in the tidal zone, just under the high tide line. It is found in the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. Purple laver is used a lot in the Japanese kitchen in a fermented form under the name 'nori'.
