Arrowgrass family

Arrowgrass species look like rush with long thin fleshy leaves. When they flower, it can be difficult to distinguish them from to sea plantain. The best way to recognize the plant is to bruise or taste a leaf. If it tastes like coriander (or even chlorine), then you've got arrowgrass in your hand. The arrowgrass family is very small. The twenty odd species are found worldwide in the vicinity of coasts. The name arrowgrass comes from the ripe seeds which often remain on the stem even after the stem has dried up. In this stage, they look a lot like arrows. Arrowgrass species are very popular as food plant by several butterfly species in the caterpillar stage.
