Carnation family

When you hear the word carnation, you probably picture a corsage in a man’s suit. You won't find those large flowers growing in the wild in the Netherlands. Most members of this family blossom white, but are usually small and inconspicuous. Just think of little mouse-ear and pearlwort. Many small species grow on sandy soils in dry dunes. The most notable carnation species in the coastal region is ragged robin, a flower that turns dune pastures pink in spring.
