Crucifer family

Cabbage, radish and broccoli are all members of the crucifer family. This family provides lots of our winter vegetables. The name crucifer refers to the four petals and four sepals lying in a cross; all members have such flowers, making it easy to recognize. Another common name for this family is mustard or cabbage family. This enormously large group consists of several species which are important in our coastal ecosystem.

There is a farmer on Texel who is experimenting with the cultivation of silty vegetables. Several of the species come from the crucifer family, such as seakale, Danish scurvy-grass and long-leaved scurvy-grass.
