Glossy eyebright

Since the 14th century, glossy eyebright has been mentioned in herbal books as a cure for various eye problems. This rare plant has been declining over the last forty years, particularly due to the influence of acid rain. Now that acid rain is starting to decline, the species seems to be recovering. Like other members of the broomrape family, glossy eyebright is a half parasite, using grass roots to obtain some of its water and nutrients.

Glossy eyebright is still quite abundant in the Dutch dunes, as well as locally in other nature reserves. It used to be common in the eastern part of the country, from north to south, but nowadays you only find it regularly outside of nature areas in the northeast. The plant's preference is dependent upon the soil: it is found on chalk, peaty or loamy soil in reasonably dry terrains. However, if the soil is damp and open, it prefers calcium-poor sands.
