Southern marsh orchid

The southern marsh orchid is a tall orchid with sturdy leaves. Orchids are generally rare plants in the Netherlands and therefore protected. This orchid is also protected but is one of the least rare orchids species in this country. It is one of the most tolerant orchids to soil disturbances and acid rain. Unlike the broad-leaved orchid, southern marsh orchids first grow to their greatest height before flowering.

Southern marsh orchids are found the most in the Netherlands and England. The Dutch name for this orchid is 'reed orchid', which gives an indication where this plant is often found. However, they grow in a variety of biotopes, such as damp peat reedlands, marsh grounds, wet hayfields, sandy plains and even in peaty grasslands. They also grow in former dune regions where drinkwater was once extracted to the point of dehydration. When the groundwater was supplemented with nutrient-rich riverwater, southern marsh orchids profitted.
