Plantain family

Plantain species are not known for their spectacular appearance. They are often seen as weeds. However some species  are used for all sorts of purposes, such as the plantago family. These plants are very common and easy to recognize thanks to their typical ribbed leaves. Ever been pricked by nettles or an insect? Rub a plantago leaf over the injured area and the itchiness or pain will quickly disappear! Plantago species are also easy to identify when flowering. Their typical blossom on a long bare stem is often referred to as a rat's tail.
