Bog pimpernell

Bog pimpernell is a very small delicate plant. When given the opportunity, it can form extensive mats. As the pink flowers open in the summer, you suddenly see this mini-plant in all its glory! Bog pimpernell has become an extremely rare plant. It grows is open areas which are damp to marshy in the summer and flooded during the winter, with sandy to peaty, phosphate-poor, not too acidic soil. Bog pimpernell is super rare. Needless to say, it is a protected plant.

With some luck, you find bog pimpernell in the Netherlands in wet dune slacks and areas more inland where seepage takes place. It grew in many more places up till 1930, however has since disappeared in most areas. Reasons include drainage and eutrophication. It is now only found on Texel, Voorne, Terschelling, in the Westland and in a few places in North Brabant and the Achterhoek. Due to its rarity in northwestern Europe, these growing areas are of international interest.
