Burnet rose

While walking through the dunes in June, you can hardly miss the sweet scent in the air. More than likely, its origin comes from the flowering burnet rose. This plant is common throughout the Dutch dune regions north of Wassenaar but especially where the soil is rich in calcium. When it blossoms in the spring, the dunes turn white from the flowers. The burnet rose prefers sunny dry places. Some plants blossom again in the autumn. Its multitude of thorns protects the plant from nibbling rabbits and other animals.
