St John's Wort family

There are various St John wort species found in the Netherlands. They all have yellow flowers. Deer stay away from this plant. The Dutch name 'hertshooi (deer hay) comes from the fact that the stems are so tough, they are difficult to eat. The species of St John's wort that grow in the tropics can grow into meters-high trees. In the Netherlands, the herbal plants can be as small as 10 centinmeters. The family is an important food source for various moths, particularly the treble-bar. Various plants in the family are also known for their medical properties.
