Broad-leaved marsh orchid, the Bol Texel, Ecomare

Grassland flora

It is difficult to speak of just one grassland flora. The flora varies according to the soil composition and the amount of moistness. There is a world of difference between a heavily fertilized meadow and the scanty grasslands in the dunes. Grasslands intended for production are generally limited to perennial ray grass and nitrogen-tolerant weeds, such as chickweed and common sheep sorrel. Dry scanty grasslands have lots of unusual grass species, flowering herbs and lots of moss. Exceptional plants such as gentians and orchids grow in wet unfertilized fields.
