Volkerakmeer
The Volkerakmeer is a freshwater lake with a stable water level, dry grassland and brushwood. It was disconnected to the marine environment in 1987, which had major consequences for the bird population. Many geese and duck species replaced the birds that preferred the salty environment. Just like the Zoommeer, the Volkerakmeer has many problems with cyano bacteria growth, killing many water fowl. Nevertheless, it is the most important brooding area for Mediterranean gulls and an important area for avocets and little terns.
