Zeeschelde

The Zeeschelde is the Belgian section of the Schelde river where tidal movement is still visible. The difference between high and low tide by Gent is still around two meters, however sluices make sure that the upper reaches of the Schelde have no tides anymore. The Zeeschelde turns into the Westerschelde by Doel, on the Belgian-Dutch border. The Zeeschelde is a unique tidal river, with notable mud flats and freshwater marshes. Life in this river is recovering quickly, after decades of heavy pollution.
